After pushing Grandma Nan out the door, Robert returned to the table and poured himself another shot.

Satira stood, her back to the sink, watching him brood. “This will be a problem for us,” she said quietly. Handling Robert when he was in this kind of mood took great delicacy. She’d found that a soft voice worked best to calm and soothe him. A woman had to proceed with caution. Not like Amber, who Robert said sometimes argued with him, sticking up for the boy. Satira knew the art of letting things go when necessary, and she also knew how to make Robert think things were his idea.

“What do you want me to do about it? Damn kid just disappeared. Couldn’t find him anywhere.”

“You could look again,” she suggested.

“He’s probably staying with some friends. Just to piss me off.”

“Tia says he doesn’t have friends.” She paused for a beat, then kept going. “He is just a little boy. He could not have gone far without money.”

Robert poured another drink and said nothing.

“I think it would be good to ask around and show people his picture. Someone had to see where he went.”

Robert ran his finger around the rim of the glass and grunted. “I can tell you one thing. The kid is going to be sorry he was born once I get through with him.” He lifted the glass to his mouth, and when he was done, he wiped his lips with the back of his hand and got up from the table.
